She was born on June 8, 1951 in Taft, Texas to Selso G. and Beatriz Rivera Cortinas. Ellie, as she was affectionately called by her family and friends, was a strong woman who always worked hard and took care of everyone around her. These characteristics were evident in her work as a certified nursing assistant at Taft Hospital and other medical agencies for many years. She would go out of her way to make sure she was at the bedside of a family member who was ill or needed help and would stay to take care of them for as long as they needed. Ellie also loved to cook and bake, and always took pride in these activities. Nothing made her happier than when friends and family would gather around the table to enjoy what she had made. She will always be remembered for her famous enchiladas and delicious desserts. Ellie could conjure up a conversation with anyone and made friends with everyone she met. Her warm, caring nature, words of wisdom, and jolly laughter will be dearly missed. Ellie is preceded in death by her parents, Selso G. Cortinas and Beatriz Rivera Cortinas and a half sister, Lydia Cortinas Deleon. Sr. Lydia and I had the distinct privilege of taking the Eucharist to dear Ellie the last few weeks of her life. We took her the Eucharist the Saturday before she died...such a magnificent peace and serenity filled the room. She was ready for her final journey home.

Meeting Ellie and ministering to her was gift. We are blessed to have known
her...even for so short a time.

Loving prayer surrounds her dear family. Know that your Ellie is very much with you...closer than ever before...just in a different way.

My condolences to the entire family of Elida. I will always remember Ellie from my time working with her at Taft ISD. She did her work with a smile and was STILL smiling by the end of the day. Forever cheerful and full of stories with an Ellie touch of spark that you could'nt help but laugh at. And thank you Ellie for your simple gestures of care and hellos you offered my son Eli when he was in his SpEd classroom. May you be in the arms of our Loving Lord.

I'll always remember my dear sister Ellie as a fun, generous, and unselfish person as evidence when our father got sick two weeks after she moved to Las Vegas to start a new life and without hesitation she returned to Taft to care for him and then our mother. I'll miss you dearly and you'll always be with me in my heart. Love you Sis!
