

A Celebration of the Life of Anna Hammons will be held Monday, December 17, 2012, at 2:00 pm at Elm Tree Baptist Church in Tahlequah, OK, with Reverend Charles Duvall, Reverend D.J. McCarter, Reverend Frank Davis and Chaplain Kevin Webster . Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Barber Cemetery in Welling, OK. Visitation for Anna will be held on Sunday, December 16th, 2012 at Reed-Culver Funeral Home from 1:00 PM until 6:00 PM.
Pallbearers for Anna include Frank Wofford, Charles McCall, Kenny Adams, Ed Fite, Mike Swim and Sydney Craig. Honorary pallbearers will be Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 3707, Hubert Bunch, Pug Christie, Perry Neal, Bill Rhoads, Jay Young, Tommie Deckard, Clarence Cordell, Terry Hale, Phillip Hix and Lloyd England.
Ann was born on September 17, 1928, in Welling, OK. She passed on Thursday, December 13, 2012, in her home with her children by her side. At her time she was also surrounded by grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ann was raised in Cherokee and Adair County, attending school at Sequoyah Elementary, Stilwell Elementary, Hastings School and Dwight Mission. She was a 1946 graduate of Haskell Institute. She married Luther James Hammons on October 13, 1947. To that union were born five children, Jerry, Faye, Gayland, Sue and Kaye.
Ann was a homemaker as well as co-owner of Hammons Electric and Hammons Construction Company. Throughout their lives, Ann and Luther traveled to various countries including Switzerland, Bahamas, Spain, France, Israel, Italy, Canada, Aruba, Mexico and Yugoslavia. Ann also visited 49 of the 50 states, only missing Wyoming. Ann was active in the Etta General Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Clerk and treasurer for several years. She was active in the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Post 3707 where she was a lifetime member since 1959. Ann worked her way through the chair, achieving the high office of Department President in 1976. She held the office of VFWA National Color Bearer in 1978. Ann volunteered at the Muskogee VA Hospital with a total of more than 5,000 volunteer hours. In 1987, she was crowned Queen of the Popcorn Poppers at the VA. Ann also volunteered for the VFWA Cancer Aid and Research. She sang with the Cherokee Adult Choir for several years. Some of Ann’s favorite pastimes included traveling and watching her grandchildren and great-children in their sports and other activities. Most that knew Ann knew her as “Meme”.
Ann is preceded in death by her husband, Luther, grandmother, Annie Nofire Christie, who raised her, mother, Diana Christie Scott, and step-father, Charles Scott, Jr. She is also preceded in death by her son, Gayland Ray Hammons, and brother, James Scott. She is survived by four children, Jerry E. Hammons, Faye (Mrs. Eddie) Morrison, Sue Garrett and Kaye Callaway, all of whom reside on the family farm at Steely Hollow. Also left to cherish her memory are her eleven grandchildren, Chris Cox, Jerri Lynn Hammons, Gayla Loftin, Jason Helsley, Brad Cox, Angela McVey, Kelli Longshore, Lynsey Hammons, Tracie Asbill, Jerri Ann Callaway, and Shania Martinez, as well as 16 great-grandchildren and a multitude of family and friends.
