Darrell Wayne Meely was born on January 11th, 1962 in Ardmore, OK, the son of Daniel and Leah Jane (Underwood) Meely. He grew up with four brothers and two sisters, Janice Locust, Clara Locust, Abraham Locust, Brian Locust, James Meely and Danny Meely. He graduated from Sequoyah High School and continued his education at Haskell, studying heat and air, horticulture and carpentry. He worked for Cherokee Nation as a wildland firefighter. He was skilled at his job and went the extra mile to help where ever needed. In 1986, when the Challenger Space Shuttle was destroyed in flight, he went to Texas and helped to collect the remnants of the once great shuttle. Darrell enjoyed playing sports of any kind, from baseball and softball to basketball and football. He loved attending Pow Wow, and spending as much time as possible with his friends. If there were fleamarkets open, Darrell was scouting for a bargain. He liked to shoot pool and throw horseshoes. He was always happy, possessed a great sense of humor, and loved to have fun. A Christian by faith, he attended New Greenleaf Church. His faith began to fail him, but Darrell was always happy to spend time with his family, sharing a laugh and shooting the breeze. The Lord called this good and faithful servant home from his labors on November 10th, 2016 in Tahlequah, OK with his loved ones by his side. Darrell was 54 years old. He will be greatly missed.
Darrell has gone home to join his grandparents, John and Martha (Locust) Meely and Thomas and Fannie Underwood, his parents, Daniel Meely and Leah Meely and stepdad, Abraham Locust. He is also preceded by his brothers, James Underwood and Danny Meely and one niece, Janessa Gourd.
Those left to cherish Darrell’s memory include his daughter and son, Ellen Faye Meely of Shawnee, Ok and son Darrin Beaver of Tahlequah, OK. He leaves two sisters and two brothers, Janice Locusat of Tulsa, Clara Locust of Tulsa, Abraham “Spuddy” Locust Jr. of Vian, OK, and Brian Locust and wife LaDonna of Chewey, OK. He leaves two grandchildren, Alyssa Cortez and Devin Davis, and his companion of many years, Alma Spottedwolf of Tahlequah, OK, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
