

Dora Bell (Keys) McDowell, age 83 of Tahlequah, OK, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2026 . Born on October 1, 1942 to Lee Sanders and Mary Keys, she lived a full and vibrant life defined by her deep faith, devotion to family, and her unmistakable spunky spirit. She was the oldest daughter of eleven girls born to Mary Keys.
Dora was married for many wonderful years to her beloved husband, Walter Rolland McDowell, Sr., who preceded her in death on November 10, 2006. Together they built a life centered on love, faith, and family. Their marriage was blessed with five children, who were the pride and joy of her life. Dora loved everything about her children and her family, and she dedicated herself wholeheartedly to caring for, supporting, and celebrating them.
Dora found joy in the simple, beautiful things in life. She loved to crochet, creating treasured handmade pieces for those she loved. Her love of flowers was evident in the beautiful gardens she created. When it came to holidays, Dora went all out. Her home was transformed with festive decorations from room to room, and her yard became a cheerful display complete with big inflatables. She truly made every season special.
In the kitchen, Dora was unmatched. She was known for her home cooking, always prepared with love and meant to bring everyone together around the table. Her desserts were especially famous among family and friends—sweet treats that became cherished traditions. She also had a well-known love for ice cream, never passing up a scoop when the opportunity arose. A devoted sports fan, Dora faithfully cheering on her favorite teams. She rarely missed a basketball game and was a huge fan of Oklahoma Sooner Football.
Dora was baptized at Antioch Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as a youth director and youth choir director. Her love for the Lord was evident in the way she lived each day—with kindness, strength, and an unwavering commitment to guiding young hearts in faith. She poured her energy into mentoring and encouraging others, leaving a lasting impact on generations of youth in her church community.
Above all else, Dora loved her children and her family. They were her greatest pride and joy, and she never missed an opportunity to show her love and support. She was spunky, feisty, and just the right amount of sassy—qualities that made her unforgettable to everyone who knew her. Dora leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, laughter, and love that will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.
She has gone on to join her parents, Lee Sanders and Mary Keys; husband, Walter McDowell, Sr.; son, Walter McDowell, Jr.; three brothers, Isiah Keys, Sr., Leroy Keys, Sr., Marvin Keys, and George Keys, Jr.; and half-sister, Mary Ann Sanders.
Those left to cherish her memory include her two sons, Everett McDowell of Shawnee, OK and Wayne McDowell of Tahlequah, OK; one stepson, Vernon McDowell (Wanda) of Muskogee, OK; two daughters, Evelyn Nero (Greg) of Mustang, OK and Marilyn McDowell of Tahlequah, OK; two sisters-in-laws, Betty McCoy (Ben) of Muskogee, OK, Jean Carr of Oklahoma City, OK; daughter-in-law, Sylvia McDowell of Tahlequah, OK, along with 10 sisters; Shirley Ray of Tahlequah, OK, Charlene White of Stilwell, OK, Deborah Keys of Broken Arrow, OK, Sandra Todd of Tulsa, OK, Patricia Lesane of Valdosta, GA, Gwendolyn Keys of Tahlequah, OK, Norma Keys of Tulsa, OK, Carla Kercheval of Dallas, TX, Doreatha Edmondson of San Diego, CA and Tammy Becknell (Alvin) of Stone Mountain, GA. Her memory lives on through her nine grandchildren, Cody McDowell, Tristan McDowell (Alicia), Quincy McDowell, Dante McDowell (Marisa), Braylon McDowell, Angela Smith (Brian), Taylor Nero, Lee Nero and Michelle McDowell, seven great-grandchildren, Coltrane McDowell, Myles McDowell, Annalise McDowell, Noelle Smith, Bentley McDowell , Brooklyn McDowell, Braxton McDowell, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
A time of visitation will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2026 from 2:00pm until 6:00pm at Reed-Culver Funeral Home. Funeral services for Dora will occur on Friday, February 20, 2026 at 2:00pm at Reed-Culver Chapel with Reverend Joe Wilson officiating. She will be laid to rest at Four Mile Branch Cemetery in Fort Gibson, OK. Serving as pallbearers include Cody McDowell, Tristan McDowell, Braylon McDowell, Quincy McDowell, Dante McDowell, and Lee Nero. Flower girls include Demetria Mayfield, Ericka Pool, and Artist Poole.
