Gene Edward McMahan

Gene Edward McMahan was born on May 17th, 1941 in Hulbert, OK, the son of Horace Leonard and Laura Jane “Lottie” (Perry) McMahan. He attended Hulbert High School and served in the National Guard, then began his working career as a meatcutter. It was on August 9th, 1967 he married the love of his life, Joyce Barnes. This union was blessed with two children, David Shane and Sheryl Lynn, and 48 years of love and laughter. Gene worked hard for his family, so when he had some spare time, he enjoyed taking care of his livestock, working in his garden and mowing the lawn. Whenever he got the chance, he loved to gather with his friends and spend time coon hunting. He liked music of all types but was especially fond of gospel and bluegrass. Gene walked close with his Lord and Savior. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Hulbert. He shared his love for his church by playing guitar and singing, and working to do whatever jobs needed to be done. There was nothing better to Gene than coming home after church on Sunday and sharing Sunday dinner with his family. He loved people and life to its fullest. He was quick to smile and give a word of encouragement. He always made time to say hello to anyone he met, and was the neighbor that was never too busy to help. He loved his wife, children, and his granddaughter, Jadyn. Gene’s health began to fail him, and the Lord called this good and faithful servant home from his labors on May 25th, 2016 in Tahlequah, OK with his family by his side. Gene was 75 years of age.

Gene is preceded in death by his mother and father, and his grandparents. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Joyce of the home in Hulbert. He leaves his son, David McMahan and his granddaughter Jadyn Grace Sreyoshi McMahan; daughter, Sheryl McMahan-Thompson and husband Levi also of Hulbert, OK. He has one brother, Albert McMahan and wife Patricia and one sister, Marilyn Tannehill also of Hulbert. His legacy will live on in his family, as well as a host of friends and church family.
