Herbert Harris, or Shorty to his family and friends, was born on November 16th, 1932 in Cincinnati, OH, the son of Herbert Harold and Anna Christine Harris. Following school, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving from 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1955. He attended school to become a diesel mechanic, a job he enjoyed for years. He married his wife, Billie Jean on September 10th, 1956 in Stilwell, OK. This union was blessed with one son and one daughter, Herbert Christopher and Rhea Ann. Shorty had a lifelong love of all things mechanical. He liked to race cars and work on them for hours on end. He enjoyed the occasional trip to the old fishing hole for a little relaxation. He was a gardener and enjoyed working out in his yard, raising everything from flowers to vegetables. He was the kind of neighbor who liked to chat with the neighbors over a good cup of coffee and swap a story or two. He adored his wife and children, and time spent with them was very special to Shorty. A Christian by faith, Shorty was a Baptist. After years of working, his body began to wear down, and the Lord called this good and kind man home from his labors on April 18th, 2015 in Muskogee, OK. Shorty was 82 years old. He will be greatly missed for his kindness, his warmth and sincerity, and the love he showed to all those he knew.
Herbert is preceded in death by his Mom, his dad, his beloved wife, Billie Jean, his children, two sisters, and one brother. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Jean Harris and his very special friends, Earnest and Janice Ware, as well as many friends and loved ones.
