H.M. "Hank" Ballard, 86, of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2026, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hank was born on May 27, 1940, in Tahlequah to Homer and Artie Mae (James) Ballard. He grew up in the Blackburn and Tahlequah communities, where he developed the strong work ethic, sharp wit, and straightforward nature that would define him throughout his life. He graduated from Tahlequah High School, where he enjoyed playing baseball and football and made many lifelong memories and friendships.
Following high school, Hank answered the call to serve his country. He initially joined the Army before transferring to the United States Navy, where he proudly served for 20 years and achieved the rank of E-7. During his military career, he served during the Cuban Missile Crisis era and traveled extensively throughout the world. One of the greatest blessings of Hank's life came in 1961 when he met the love of his life, Margaret Mary "Peggy" Harris, in Florida. The two were married in 1962 and shared more than six decades of love, adventure, and devotion. Their Navy life took them to many places, with Peggy faithfully by his side. Along the way they welcomed two sons, Gary, who was born in Bermuda, and Brian, who was born in Brunswick, Maine.
After his military service, Hank worked as an electrician, a trade well suited to his intelligence, skill, and ability to fix just about anything. If something needed repaired, Hank could usually figure it out. Hank also loved spending time outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, water skiing, gardening, and drag racing. He was a man who appreciated both hard work and good fun. He had a wonderful sense of humor and could make almost anyone laugh. Those who knew him best will remember that he was direct and to the point, but beneath that straightforward exterior was a generous heart. Hank was always willing to share what he had and help those around him. Above all else, Hank loved his family. He was devoted to Peggy, proud of his sons, and deeply cherished the life they built together. His family was the center of his world, and he took great pride in caring for them. He was a faithful church attendee and lived his life guided by strong values, loyalty, and dedication.
Hank is survived by his beloved wife, Peggy Ballard; his sons, Gary Ballard and wife Rose of Peggs, Oklahoma, and Brian Mark Ballard of Pryor, Oklahoma; his grandchildren, Cody Christopher King Ballard of Tahlequah and Lily Mae Ballard of Fernandina Beach, Florida; his sisters, Stella Anderson of Seligmon, Missouri and Deloris McGowen of Choctaw, Oklahoma; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Artie Mae Ballard; his brothers, Okey Ballard, Samuel Eugene Ballard, and H.M. Ballard; his sisters, Irene Keeter, Loretta Wilson, and Juanita Ballard, who passed away in infancy; and several beloved brothers-in-law and family members.
Hank leaves behind a legacy of service, laughter, generosity, and unwavering love for his family. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
