Jackson Miller was born on March 7th, 1948, in Tahlequah, OK, the son of William and Nannie (Scott) Miller. He was nicknamed “Peanut” at birth, a nickname he kept throughout his lifetime. Jackson was a full-blooded Cherokee and a member of the Cherokee Nation. He grew up in a household with two brothers: Billy Joe and Johnny; and two sisters: Sallie and Marilyn. He began grade school in Tahlequah then moved with his family by train in a relocation program to Los Angeles, California in 1956. They settled in Los Angeles where he attended school and graduated from L.A. high. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army at the age of 18 on June 24th, 1966. He served in Vietnam from 1966-68 building aircraft landing strips as part of an engineering battalion and earned the rank of Sergeant. He was honorably discharged on June 23rd, 1969 and was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and others. He returned home to California where he worked until 1975 when he joined his parents and other family members on the move back home to Oklahoma. He attended the University of Oklahoma and Tulsa Junior College, graduating with a degree in surveying. From there he worked as a land surveyor throughout Oklahoma and surrounding states until his retirement. He married the love of his life, Margaret Schmitt in Tulsa, OK, on July 25th, 1980. He was the proud father of one son, Anthony Miller. Jackson loved his family and the great outdoors. He enjoyed his downtime listening to music, preferably The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, and Willie Nelson. He liked reading, especially books about the Civil War and other historical accounts. He absolutely adored time with his family, especially his grandson, and all of his nieces and nephews. There was nothing to beat a little fishing on a warm spring day, and watching the OU Sooners play football in the fall. He had a wonderful personality and was the kind of friend and neighbor everyone wanted. For all the plans he had for the future, the Lord called this good and faithful servant, worker, husband, father, grandpa and friend home from his Labors on February 25th, 2023 in Tulsa, OK. He was 74 years old and will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, his mother and father, two brothers, Billy Joe McNac, and Johnny Miller, one sister Marilyn Christie, and his best friend, Roger Hatfield.
Those left to celebrate his memory include his wife, Margaret of the home, his son, Anthony Miller and wife Laura of Norman, OK, and one sister, Sallie Cuaresma of Gardena, CA. He lives on in his grandson, Benjamin Miller of Norman, OK, and his nieces and nephews, Nancy Little, Nick Cuaresma, Steve McNac, Larry McNac, Timothy McNac, Johnny Dale Miller, and Nancy Dry, as well as many cousins, great nieces and great nephews, and a host of friends and loved ones.
