Jerry was the kind of man who could find something to enjoy just about anywhere. Give him a golf course, a NASCAR race, a good song, or a gathering of people he cared about, and he was content. He loved music of all kinds and especially enjoyed going to concerts. One of those memories took him all the way to Texas to Billy Bob’s, a trip that became one more story worth telling. He had a naturally friendly way about him and could make a new friend almost anywhere he went. He enjoyed the horse races and cockfights, and he always appreciated a good joke. More than that, he liked making other people laugh. If there was an opportunity to lighten the mood or get a smile out of someone, Jerry usually found it.
His life also took him far beyond Oklahoma. Jerry proudly served his country in the United States Army, and after completing his basic training, he was sent to Germany. In the years that followed, he made his living as a self-employed carpenter, putting to use the skill and independence that suited him well.
Family remained an important part of Jerry’s story. He leaves behind his companion, Hollie Coffey; his daughter, Carla Callaway; his brothers, Bobby Jack Callaway and Timmy Joe Callaway; his sisters, Ann Granger and Julie Teague; his grandchildren, Jaci Callaway, Erica Callaway, Nathan Scheu and Aidan Carey; and his great-grandchildren, Carter T. and Carter C.
Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Andrew James Callaway; his mother, Faye Magee; his stepfather, Herb Magee; his son, James Earl Callaway; his sister, Paula Magee; his brothers, Robert Callaway and Kelly Callaway; his brother-in-law, Tom Granger; and his granddaughter, Adrianna Lynn Scheu.
Jerry’s life was made up of the things he genuinely enjoyed: good music, a day on the golf course, watching a race, traveling, telling jokes, meeting people and spending time with those who mattered to him. Those are the pieces of him his family will carry forward, along with plenty of stories that will still bring a laugh when his name comes up.
