Born on September 18, 1938, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, to Harry Eric Herman and Rosanna Pearl (Johnson) Herman. John grew up with a passion for adventure, music, family and community service. He graduated from Perth Amboy High School and proudly served his country in the United States Navy. His military service was a source of great pride for him, and he remained committed to the values of honor, duty, and country throughout his life.
He proposed to his beloved wife, Bonnie, on Valentine's Day 65 years ago, and they married in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1960. Their honeymoon at the Indian Lodge at Ft. Gibson Lake was the perfect start to their lifelong journey together.
As a man of faith, John served as an altar boy at St Peter’s Episcopal Church in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. His kindness, generosity, and devotion to those around him left a lasting impact on everyone he met, and he never met a stranger.
John's love for life was contagious, and he had a way of making everyone feel special. He adored children and cherished the time he spent with his kids and grandkids, who brought immense joy to his life.
His family will always cherish memories of their family vacations… from camping in the Colorado mountains, to float trips down the Illinois River in their canoes. But the most treasured vacations were the road trips back to New Jersey to visit family. His family will never forget strolling along the Seaside Heights Boardwalk eating pizza and Italian sausage sandwiches, catching crabs in the surf and burying “daddy” in the sand.
He was a fun-loving and quick-witted individual, with an infectious sense of humor. He enjoyed teasing and playing pranks on all those around him. Each Christmas, he delighted in giving the kids a gag gift just to see their reactions and then enjoy a good laugh together.
As a devoted father and grandfather, he was always eager to attend/coach school events, sporting games, and Girl Scouting events. He especially cherished the father-daughter dances with his daughter and granddaughter, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
In his free time, John enjoyed fishing, traveling, and camping. He was an avid fan of the NY Giants and loved music from the 50's and 60's, often reminiscing about his days dancing on the American Bandstand show. He also enjoyed visiting the aquarium in Jenks, Oklahoma, with his grandchildren, marveling at the underwater wonders together.
John is now in his heavenly home with his son, Brian Herman; his parents, Harry Eric and Rosanna Pearl Herman; his grandparents and his siblings, Harry Herman Jr, William Herman; Elizabeth “Betty” Smith, Olive Tomasko, and Ruth Barnhart.
John is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Herman; his sons, Russell Herman and wife Michelle, Kenny Herman; his daughter, Sherri Henson and husband Gary; his grandchildren, Katelyn Herman, Brittany Herman, Joshua Herman, Alexandra Herman, Emily Herman, Matthew Herman, and Tyler Herman; his three great-grandchildren, Tyr Sutton, Jordan Herman, and Kynlee Hines; and his furry companion Ama.
Rest in peace daddy. Your love, laughter, and legacy will never be forgotten.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, March 3, 2025, at 12:30 PM at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery in Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma.
