Kathryn Lois McConnell-Moon was born on January 10th, 1925 in Springfield, MO, the daughter of Fred and Dorothy (Grimmett) McConnell. She grew up in a household with two brothers and three sisters, Junior McConnell, Joe McConnell, Esther Mae McConnell, Wanda Jean McConnell, and Dorma Faye McConnell. She attended school in Rogers, AR. On December 24th, 1948, she married her best friend, Don A Moon. He was the father of her two sons, Earl and Bobby. She had a daughter from a a previous marriage named Shirley. The family moved to Tahlequah in 1953. They had a happy home with everyone doing their part to keep the household running smoothly. She was affectionately known as the “Cake Maker” in Tahlequah because of all the beautiful cakes she baked and decorated over the years. She was also known for her delicious pies. The most impressive art she possessed was as a Water Witcher. She always preferred peach tree limbs and had no trouble locating water or telling you how far down the water table was. She witched for wells in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas. She had an uncanny ability for accuracy. Also, there was her cooking. As a young girl, her mother gave her the chore of being the family cook and bought her a 10 cent cookbook to learn from. It was one of her favorites. She was so talented in the kitchen as an adult, she published and sold her own cookbook under the name ”Kathryn’s Home Cooking” at the age of 71. She joined the Ladies Home Extension in 1976 and for the next thirty years she never missed a single meeting. She served as both President and Vice President. She cooked at Camp Egan and made pies and cakes for some of the restaurants in town.
At the age of 8 she received the Lord and was baptized in the river by her father, who recently became a preacher. After her husband died, she started attending Steeley Springs Baptist Church near her home in Tahlequah. She liked working in the kitchen on special occasions and working with crafts. Life wasn’t always kind to Kathryn, she lost her daughter Shirley in 1982, her husband Don passed in 1992, and her son Bobby passed in 2013. Kathryn was a tenacious, feisty and determined soul who enjoyed music and people, especially the Senior Citizens she had fun playing cards with at the Center. She enjoyed having a good time, especially with her siblings. The Lord called this good and faithful servant home from her many labors on January 21, 2021 in Tulsa, OK, following an extensive illness. She was 96 years old, her charm, warm smile, and laughter was contagious. Her talent for taking care of others will be sorely missed. Proverbs 31:31 “Reward her for all she has done. Let her deeds publicly declare her praise. “
She is preceded in death by her grandparents, her mother and father, her husband Donald, her daughter Shirley, son Bobby, two brothers, Junior and Joe and one sister, Wanda Jean Bobbit.
Those she leaves includes her son, Earl Moon and wife Carolyn of Sapulpa, OK, two sisters, Ester Mae McConnell of St. Louis, MO, and Dorma Faye Redding and husband Linzie of House Springs, MO.
