Kelly Eugene Yeager was born November 30, 1960, to Rufus and Ruby Irene Yeager. He passed away Saturday morning, October 23, 2021, after a long battle with colorectal cancer and an even fiercer fight against COVID-19.
But life is about what you can fit in between those dates, and Kelly filled his with wit, humor, and maybe a few too many four letter words.
After youthful adventures in San Antonio and time spent as a clothing designer in Tulsa, Kelly returned to the town he was born, and established himself in Tahlequah with a small clothing and jewelry store just off of Main Street. What started as making lunch for his beloved mother turned into a small restaurant in his apartment above the shop. Soon after, in 1989, Kelly’s Antiques & Tea Room was born.
What followed were tales still told 30 years later, of parties, catering orders, fashion shows, wild customers, dear friends, and getting everything done at the last possible second—but getting it done well.
Kelly was willful, innovative, creative, generous, and a damn good chef. From Kelly’s Retro Resale to making sure his recipes and legacy could continue at Ruby’s, Kelly went into every project with inspiration and passion, putting everything he had into whatever he was doing. No one ever got to know Kelly and walked away without a joke or a story—some of which may even be safe for work.
He had many passions in life, from “junking” to cooking to watching every possible show starring RuPaul. He never lost interest in vintage fashion or interior design. He loved Boston Terriers, his friends, and most of his family.
Kelly is proceeded in death by his father Rufus, his older brother Raymond, three beloved Bostons: Lucy, Ethel, and Toots, and his best friend through life: his mother Irene.
He leaves behind his sister Mary “Sis” Henson, his 13 year old doggie Ozzy, and more loved ones than could possibly be named.
In following his wishes there will be no ceremony, instead the family asks that you remember Kelly with a dirty joke and laugh, a story and complaint about terrible television. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to The American Cancer Society or the Humane Society of Cherokee County, hug your mother, love on your dog, or tip a drag queen.
