Lula Mae Lacy-Bird was born on Friday, February 14th, 1947, in Leach, OK, the daughter of James and Carrie (King) Lacy. She grew up with her brother George and four sisters, Louise, Betty, Lou Ann, and Judy. She attended school at Kansas, graduating from Kansas High School and then graduated from Haskell Junior College with her certificate in Business Administration working as a Community Health Representative and as a Behavioral Health Representative for Cherokee Nation, working for them for over twenty years. She was a dedicated and loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. When she wasn’t working, she could be found devoting herself to her family. She loved to spend the day hunting for crawdads and wild onions, and making her famous pea salad and potato salad, no family gathering would be complete without them. She was proud of her Cherokee Heritage and spoke Cherokee fluently. She was gifted with a needle and did beautiful beadwork, and sang the old gospel favorites in Cherokee as well, all in the company of her canine companion, Cola. She had a wonderful sense of humor, was jovial and light hearted, and loved to be around people, especially playing Bingo at Salina or Kansas. Her evenings found her in front of the TV, yelling for her favorite WWE wrestlers. Some she didn’t care for much, others she adored. She was a Christian and a devoted member of the Elm Prairie Baptist Church, serving in any capacity she could from teaching VBS to singing for Sunday. She was married to Alvin Bird after making a home with him for many years on February 14th, 2005. She laid her husband Alvin to rest early in the springtime of 2019 and continued keeping busy until she passed from this life on Sunday, July 28th, 2019 in Siloam Springs, AR. She was 72 years old.
She is preceded in death by her mother, father, her husband Alvin, her brother George Lacy, sisters Louise Lacy, Betty Lacy Buckhorn, Lou Ann Lacy-Haney, and Judy Lacy, and her son, Roland Vigil.
Those left to cherish Lula’s memory include her sons, Michael Vigil and wife Beverly of Sante Fe, NM, and Terry Fields of Watts, OK. She lives on in her two grandchildren, Jacqulein Vigil of Phoenix, AZ and Michael Roland Vigil of Albuquerque, NM. There is a great grandson, Davis Knight Jenkins of Phoenix, AZ. She will be fondly remembered by her four nieces, Melody Sands, Carrie Haney, Mary Bell and Christine Ludlow, and nephews Tim Glass, Larry Glass, Gerald Lacy and Steve Lacy as well as many cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
