Mary Sue Blackbird was born on July 3rd, 1933 in Stilwell, OK, the daughter of Jim and Nannie (Manes) Squirrel. She finished school then became a home health nurses aide finishing her career at McCalls Chapel, working with special needs individuals. She loved her job and was happiest when helping those around her. Her talents were varied and her ability to tune a car or fix an engine was exceptional. When she wasn’t working, she loved to go fishing and camping, and playing her guitar. She was able to plant a beautiful vegetable garden with plenty to go around. She was good at working word puzzles and any chance to gather with her friends at the casino to share an evening was a good time for Mary. She still cooked all the old family favorites like salt meat with greens and boiled cabbage and potatoes, and her fry bread with gravy was the best in the neighborhood. Special meals included Mary’s famous chicken and dumplings. She was strong willed, outspoken and loved her family and the grandkids, always putting their needs first and foremost. Shoe her a baby and Mary found time to sit and rock in the rocking chair. This included her beloved canine sidekick, Chijuaya. Pastor Johnson Keith baptized Mary at Mulberry Church, and she considered Mulberry her family church all of her lifetime. She met adversity in life like everything else, head on and ready for the challenge. She gave life all she had to give until the Lord called this good and faithful servant home from her labors on July 31st, 2017, at her home in Tahlequah surrounded by her loving family. She was 84 years old. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Mary has gone home to join her mother, father, two brothers, Jima and Benny Squirrel, and two great grandchildren, Jonathon Thirsty and Joshua Thirsty.
Those left to cherish her memory include her adored daughter, Mary Thirsty of the home in Tahlequah, OK. Her brothers and sisters include Joe Squirrel of Stilwell, Tim Squirrel of Stilwell, Lucy McGraw of Stilwell, Louise Roberts of Stringer, OK, Eliza Smith of Stilwell and Elizabeth Grigsby also of Stilwell. She leaves her three adored grandsons, Jesse Price and companion Andrea Ford both of Tahlequah, Seneca Colbert of Ada, OK, and Simon Thirsty also of Tahlequah. There are two great grandchildren in Lemore, CA, Shonda Colbert and Tamara Colbert, as well as many nieces, nephews and a host of friends and loved ones.
