Matthew Wade Mason, or Matt to his friends, was born on April 7, 1981 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the son of Roger Mason and Patricia Joan (Gilliam) Stewart, along step-dad, Gary Stewart. He was raised in the Fort Gibson area along with his two brothers, Adam and Andrew. He was a graduate of Fort Gibson High School and went on to continue his education at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, where he eventually made his home.
Matt was a one of a kind person. If you asked anyone who knew him, they always had a story to tell. One thing they knew for sure, was he cared for people. He gave a voice to those who had no voice. He was so brave and fearless; speaking truth to power. He was a true humanitarian. It was not uncommon for him grill up hot dogs in the park and feed anyone who was hungry. He never met a stranger and was always up for meeting new people. He had a unique sense of humor, never missing an opportunity to make others laugh. Matt had a love for the outdoors and appreciated the beauty it possessed, capturing countless pictures of the local sunsets. A self-taught animator, he helped his friend create the Cherokee short film “Rabbit Stories”. He was given the Cherokee name “Madu” by his girlfriend’s grandmothers, and he loved it. Matt was eager to learn about anything and everything. If he didn’t know it, he would sure find out. His favorite bands included Pink Floyd and ELO, who inspired him to make his own music. He was a great musician who could play the guitar, bass, piano, and record his own music. A man of many talents, this selfless and caring human being passed from this life on Sunday, March 31, 2024 at the age of 42 years old. He will missed so much! “Shine on You Crazy Diamond”
He has gone on to join his parents, Roger Mason and Patricia Stewart.
Those left to cherish his memory include his two brothers, Adam Mason of Broken Arrow, OK and Andrew Mason of Fort Gibson, OK. He also leaves his cherished girlfriend, Kourtney Vann of the home in Tahlequah and step-father, Gary Stewart of Muskogee, OK, as well as many family, friends and loved ones that knew and loved him.
A Celebrate of Life for Matt will be held at a later date.
