Mona Wheeler was born on November 13th, 1923 in Eufaula, OK, the daughter of Robert Macbeth and Emma (Talomase) Bunyard. She was raised with her three brothers, Jeff, Ralph, and Robert Jr. She graduated from Tahlequah High School in 1941 and immediately entered Draughon’s School of Business, graduating in 1942. She then began working first as a secretary at Chilocco School, then Ozark Nursery, and finally retiring in 1983, from W.W. Hastings Medical Center as the Secretary to Nursing Services. She married her husband, James P. Wheeler on May 5th, 1944. This union was blessed with 47 years of happiness and four children, Barbara, Beverly, Berdena, and Robert. Her husband was a school teacher and Mona dedicated herself to helping her husband and children, making their home a place of rest. Mona and her husband were members of the First Baptist Church of Tahlequah and together they worked to serve God in any way they could. Mona was a dedicated daughter, wife and mother. She enjoyed keeping up with all the activities her children and grandchildren participated in. She was loved by everyone she met, and always had a warm smile and a kind word. Her husband passed from this life on August 28th, 1991. Mona continued to spend her time with those she loved most, her family and friends. She enjoyed attending church functions, sharing a meal or a cup of coffee. She served as a Sunday School teacher, WMU Secretary and supported efforts in foreign missions at Tahlequah First Baptist Church until moving to Tulsa in October of 2004. While in Tulsa, Mona moved her letter to Parkview Baptist Church. Mona was a member of the Women’s Sewing Group and The Joy Class. These groups contributed their creative sewing gifts to less fortunate families during the holiday seasons throughout the year. They also organized the Church Angel tree each year, which provided much needed gifts for their adopted school, Salk Elementary. Her health began to fail her, and Mona went home to her Lord and Savior on February 12th, 2015. She was 91 of age. She will be greatly missed for her love, compassion and the happiness she shared with her many family and friends.
Mona is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James, her daughter Barbara Wheeler, and three brothers, Jeff Bunyard, Ralph Tucker Bunyard, and Robert M. Bunyard Jr.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving children, Beverly Jean Tyson and husband James of Tahlequah, OK, Berdena Mae Bergman and husband Bob of Beggs, OK, and Robert Matthew Wheeler of Tulsa, OK. Her legacy lives on in her seven grandchildren, Lori Anderson, Melissa Cardenaz, Madison Wheeler, Tori Wheeler, John Bergman, Justin Bergman, and Traci Benjamin. She also leaves eleven great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
