Nick Carlton Young was born on September 21st, 1925, the son of James and Iva (Phillips) Young in Gore, OK. He came from a family of six brothers and five sisters, George, Lester, James, Charles, Douglas, Clarence, Maxine, Ena, Margaret, Ruby and Gracie. He was working as a gunsmith when the call to serve his country in WWII came. He proudly enlisted in the US Army, serving as an airplane armorer from November 6th, 1945 until his honorable discharge in May 3rd, 1947, attaining the rank of Corporal. He met and married his best friend, Betty Keys on June 25, 1950 and they spent 41 years together raising three children, Nick Jr., Randy, and Teresa until her passing on October 2, 1991. Nick was lucky enough to meet a second true love in his life Kizzie Bernice Ballard and they were married on April 23, 1993 adding Bernice’s daughter Tammie as his fourth child. Nick worked his entire life in auto body repair, and was a master at his craft. Nick loved people and it showed, he had a heart as big as the great outdoors. He was the kind of man that would gladly give you the shirt off his back, and then offer you a cup of coffee to go with it. He was everybody’s friend. He had a mischievous side and loved to prank his friends and relatives. He had the kind of laughter that lit up the room and made everyone happy. He was always up for a game of golf or any game for that matter. Nick would fashion old fashioned bean flips for the children, a form of a sling shot. He was quick witted and always ready with a joke and loved to make people laugh. Nick was a man of faith and was in regular attendance at Sellers Mission Church throughout his lifetime. Nothing made him happier than to have all of his family gather at church and then for Sunday dinner. He adored his family and was a wonderful son, husband, father and grandfather. Always putting his family’s needs ahead of his own. The Lord called this good and faithful servant home from his labors on February 8th, 2018 in Muskogee, OK, with those he loved around him. He was 92 years old. He will be missed.
Nick is preceded in death by his mother, father, five brothers and four sisters, George Young, Lester Young, James Young, Douglas Young, Clarence Young, Ena Young, Margaret Sequichie, Ruby Ballard, and Gracie Thomsen, and his two grandsons, Jacob Winget and Joshua Young.
Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife Bernice of the home and his four children, Nick Young Jr. and wife Robin of Tulsa, Randy Young and wife Laura of Park Hill, OK, Teresa Young of Tulsa, and Tammie Switzer and husband Scott of Park Hill, OK.
