Robert Edgar Callaway, or” Canoe “and “Chooch” to his family, was born on November 8th, 1952 in Tahlequah, OK, the son of Andrew James and Mary Faye (Adkisson) Callaway. He grew up in a household with four brothers and three sisters, Jerry, Bobby, Kelly, Timmy, Ann, Julie, and Paula. He attended and graduated from Hulbert High School in 1972. Robert worked from a young age whether it was hauling hay or working construction with Herb. He always liked to have some cash in his pocket. He worked for Tahlequah Lumber Company delivering supplies, and the Tahlequah School System as a Sanitation Technician, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. He took working seriously and never missed a day. Robert managed the El Paso City Limits for many years. Robert left an impact on so many people that he met during these jobs. That’s not to say he didn’t enjoy the finer things of life, like a Nascar race, the races at the Muskogee Track, boating on the lake, and going out to eat! He worked at the Boys and Girls Club of Tahlequah, passing out snacks and keeping an eye on the kids til classes started. He also made sure that anyone that needed their lawn mowed knew he would take care of them. Robert was kind and patient, giving freely of his time and his talents. He wasn’t overly thrilled about being in a big crowd, but if there were just a couple people present, he loved a good gab session. Robert had a way of making you feel like you were the most important, he always made time for you. He had a laugh that was irresistible, his whole body laughed and if it couldn’t make you join in laughing, you had issues. His family meant the world to him, and he was especially proud of his daughters, Crystal Gayle and Chrisie. Any chance to spend a little quality time with his six grandchildren made him very happy. He was the best uncle to his nieces and nephews and he always kept tabs on all his brothers and sisters. He was the genuine article, Robert was true to himself. He enjoyed life just the way he found it. A Baptist by faith, the Lord called this good and faithful servant home from his labors on April 30th, 2021 in Tahlequah, OK. He was 68 years old and will be greatly missed.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lidge and Vinnie Callaway, and his maternal grandparents, Thomas Edgar and Mamie (Phillips) Adkisson. He also joins his mother, father, step father Herb Magee, brother Billy Dean and one sister, Paula Magee and brother-in-law, Tom Granger.

Those left to remember his legacy include his daughters, Crystal Gayle Moore and companion Brian Muck of Norwood, OK, and Chrisie Callaway and companion Ricky Spencer of Tahlequah, OK. He leaves his four brothers and two sisters, Jerry Callaway and companion Holly Coffee of Peggs, OK, Bobby Callaway, Kelly Callaway both of Tahlequah, OK, and Timmy Callaway and wife Cathy of Woodall, OK, Ann Granger and Julie Teague and husband Frank all of Tahlequah, OK. He lives on in his six grandchildren, Stephanie Moore of Norwood, Ok, Amber Moore of Tahlequah, Chloe Ward and husband Bryar of Tahlequah, Layne Eastham and Ethan Callaway both of Tahlequah, OK, and Serena Moore also of Norwood. He also leaves one great grandchild, Wrenlee Ann Ward as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones too numerous to mention.

Mom, Carmen and I were so sorry to hear about Robert's passing. I hope Dad and Jennifer were able to be there when Robert arrived in Heaven. Although we have been separated for years by distance, family will always be family in our hearts. I have very fond memories of Robert and the rest of the Callaway family. Robert was 5 years older than me but that just meant he was strong enough to rearrange papa Callaway's hay bales to make awesome forts. I don't think I ever saw him without a big smile on his face. You will all be in our thoughts and prayers.
