Ted Don McCrary was born on May 3rd, 1947 in Tulia, TX, the son of Earl Byron and Bessie Mae (Nation) McCrary. He grew up in the home with three brothers and four sisters, Guy, Troy, Leo, Sally, Edna, Inez and Ethel. Upon graduating from Kansas high school, he attended one year of college at NEO in Miami, OK. In 1967, he was enlisted into the US Army and was originally slated to coordinations, but became a cook instead, a job he enjoyed for over two years. He returned to the Twin Oaks area and on December 23rd, 1978, he married the love of his life and his best friend, Kathryn Dykes. This marriage was blessed with a son John, a daughter Katrina, and his very special “chosen children”, Stacy, Shannon and her husband Chris, Dianna, and Amanda. He was a busy rancher, saw mill worker, farmer and tractor aficionado. How he loved a tractor! By far, his favorite mode of transportation. He was gifted with his woodworking skills and could make anything from cabinets to shelving and picture frames. He even made special little transport boxes so his grandkids could ride in safety on the tractor. He loved the family farm and most of all, his wife, kids, and especially the grandkids. He was a member of the Pryor Independent Order of Odd Fellows and served as an assistant advisor for Oaks 4-H when his son was in school. Don did disaster relief work with his tractor following snow storms and tornados. He would grab his chainsaw and head to Twin Oaks. His chain saw were bigger than any around, so the county kept them filled and Don kept cutting. Don could outcut anyone in the county. He loved people! There were no strangers in Don’s life, just friends he hadn’t met yet. He was kind, warm and had a funny sense of humor that he used on friends and family alike. He was a member of the Crossties Cowboy Church and served his Lord and Savior for over 35 years faithfully. He was always there when anyone needed help or just a smile. The Lord called Don home from his labors on Saturday, June 4th, 2016 in Twin Oaks, OK. He was 69 years old. He will be greatly missed by his many family and friends.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Troy, Leo, and Guy, one grandson, Riley and his in-laws, John and Marie Dykes.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Kathryn of the home in Rose, and his children, John “Jack” McCrary and wife Eleanor of Noorvick, AK, Katrina McCrary of Rose, Ok, Stacy Avery of Locust Grove. OK, Shannon Watkins and husband Chris of Leach, OK, Dianna Foreman of Leach, Ok, and Amanda Fowler and husband Steven of Kansas, OK. He leaves four sisters, Sally Smallen of Muskogee, Edna Lindsey of Coweta, Inez Bloomer of Red Cloud, NE, and Ethel Thurman and husband Bobby of Dallas, TX. His legacy lives on in his six grandchildren, Harley Colvard, Kailaine McCrary, Aurora McCrary, Jacob McCrary, Zane McCrary, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
