Wanda May Cornsilk was born on March 26th, 1942 in Tahlequah, OK, the daughter of Henry Jake and Ella May (Anders) Cornsilk. She grew up with one brother and two sisters, Oscar Ray, Kathy and a baby sister that passed in infancy. She graduated from Central High School in Tulsa, OK. She was the proud Mama of five children, Tina Louise, Nita Louise, Dina Sue, Deerae and Michael Dean. She worked in the highly competitive field of Meat Cutting in the early days of women joining the field. It wasn’t easy, the work was hard and physically demanding. There was traveling around the state involved and sometime less than friendly co-workers, Wanda never gave it a second thought. She could keep up with the best of them. When she had some down time, she would go dancing. She loved swing, country, any type of line dancing. She loved her garden and raised the most beautiful flowers and cucumbers. She was always on the lookout for the exclusive bargain, and garage sales is where she found them! She made a mean goulash in the kitchen and her stir fry, cornbread, and fried potatoes were the best! Weekends were made for taking her kids to Barron Fork Creek for a little sunning, a little swimming and a picnic. The holidays were something she looked forward to. She loved to dress up in costume, and it was a bonus if the costume was orange or bright green, her favorite colors. Wanda liked everything to be matching, from dressing to her socks, everything matched. She was quirky, had a great sense of humor, loved people, and went out of her way to make others happy. She loved her children and grandchildren fiercely, and her loyalty to her family had no bounds. As she got older, she demonstrated her need to be independent more and more. She constantly talked of getting a car to take herself places, not wanting to be a bother to her family. A Christian by faith, the lord called Wanda home from her many labors on May 4th, 2021 in Tahlequah, OK. She was 79 years old and will be greatly missed by her family.
She is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, William and Katie(Scott) Cornsilk and her maternal grandparents, George and Sarah Anders. She joins her mother and father, brother Oscar and her baby sister, her beloved daughter, Deerae Guthrie and one great grandson, Dametri Martin.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Tina Rainwater and husband rick of Wagoner, OK, Nita Louise Prewitt and companion Billy Garner of Chouteau, OK, Dina Sue Courville of McCloud, OK, and Michael Dean Christmas of Tulsa, OK. She leaves one sister, Kathy Bence of Owasso, OK. She lives on in her 11 grandchildren, Lawanda Sellers-Little and husband Mike of Tahlequah, Justin Sellers of Tahlequah, Johnny Stowe of Cleveland, OK, Jason Stowe of Terlton, OK, Timothy Stowe of Sand Springs, OK, Courtney Courville of Tulsa, OK, Ashley Graham and James of Inola, Breanna Swaney and husband David of Owasso, Cherokee Christmas, Isis Christmas, and Hitchta Christmas all of Tulsa, and Crystal Sellers of Tulsa, OK. She also leaves her great grandchildren, Jennifer Sellers, Cynthia Martin, Stormy Bodwell, Howard “Howie” Summers, and Timythy Summers, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones too numerous to mention.
