Alma was born in Providence, Kentucky on January 19, 1927 to the late Parley and Elsie Harkins. She was married to James C. Martin on August 7, 1955, blessing them to be together over 70 years before Jim’s passing in 2024.
Alma was a high school home economics teacher in Princeton, Ky and a devoted mother, grandmother, homemaker and gardener for many years as she and Jim participated in collegiate activities and organizations throughout their years at The University of Kentucky, The University of Missouri, and then on to both Murray State University (Alma’s alma mater) and Morehead State University in Kentucky where Jim was a Professor. At all locations, Alma was a Women’s club member, school volunteer, and Sunday school teacher as they were members of Southern Baptist churches. Most loved were the First Baptist churches of both Murray and Morehead, Ky. In retirement, Alma moved along with Jim to various locations in Florida to be near family.
Alma is survived by Diane Martin Junker (Tom) of Tallahassee and Thomasville, GA and beloved grandchildren, Lindsey Blomberg Ashcraft (Jeff), Megan Johnson (Brad), Chelsea Blomberg, and great grandchild, Everly Johnson, all of Tallahassee, and step grandchildren, Thomas and Steven Junker of Illinois. Surviving also are niece, Dawn Farley (Rick), and nephew, Phil Coffman (Connie)of Diamond, Ky., and their families.
Also predeceased was her sister, Dorothy Harkins Coffman; nephew, Brett Coffman; and infant brother.
A family memorial service is planned for the Tallahassee National Cemetery on Apalachee Parkway in Tallahassee, Florida just prior to interment of the ashes of Alma’s earthly life next to Jim’s. Service date pending.
Flowers are discouraged due to the limitations after service date in a National cemetery, but as family has requested info, a donation to Dolly Parton’s Childhood Literacy program is suggested as it is a timely and favorite charity of her immediate family.
