OBITUARY

Barbara Carroll

January 24, 1942November 13, 2018

Barbara Ann Carroll entered into heavenly rest on November 13, 2018 after struggling to recover from a routine surgery. She was born in St. Petersburg, FL, spent her elementary years in Miami and moved with her family to Jacksonville, FL in 1954. Barbara was the oldest daughter of Cecil and Lena Carroll. She graduated from Alfred I. DuPont in 1960 and from Stetson University in January, 1965.

Barbara retired after 38 years with the Duval County School Board. For 31 years she was a social studies teacher at Ft. Caroline Middle where she helped organize and chaperone annual trips for students to Washington and Williamsburg. She taught one year in the gifted program at Darnell Cookman and finished her career as Media Specialist at Terry Parker High. She traveled all over the world and turned her love for travel into lesson plans. She brought back artifacts and slides to share with students and enjoyed bringing places near and far to life with stories of personal experiences.

In 1976 she was initiated in Chapter H of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was active in her chapter and served on several state committees as well. She felt it was an honor to be the first woman inducted into the Civitan Club of South Jacksonville-a club her dad had helped to found in 1959. She served as President of the club during its 50th year (2009). She also served a term on the Board of Directors of Baptist Towers. She became a member of Southside Baptist Church in 1954 and was an active participant in many areas in the life of the church. Her main focus was her love for the Media Center.

She is survived by sister, Sandra Carroll Strasen, nephew Shanon Strasen, niece Stacy Hartmann, her husband Kyle and daughters Abbie Carroll and Katherine Elizabeth, “beach sisters” cousins Beverly Johnson and Kathy Roath...and too many other cousins to mention.

I have known Barbara for 47 years. She was the planner for my and Ronnie's wedding and also for my son and daughter-in-law's wedding. She was the leader of our "College and Career" Bible study at Southside Baptist Church. We had great times of Bible study, fellowship, and fun in our group with Barbara as our guide! She always kept up with our family, lending her support, love, and keeping us in line (LOL!). We were Sisters in PEO and Sisters in Christ. I am missing her already. Until we meet again at Jesus' feet, Love you dearly, Donna and Ronnie Allen

Barbara was a lifelong friend to my mother and very much a part of our family as I was growing up. We loved seeing her every year around the holidays and when she traveled with us. I will always remember her as a wonderful friend who was faithful, generous, and selfless. I know that she touched so many lives as a friend, sister, daughter, aunt, cousin and in her career with the school system and through her service to her church. She is so loved and will be missed.

My husband and I moved into our new home in 1992, it was the second day when Barbara brought over a casserole and welcomed us to the neighborhood. I’ve known Barbara since 1985 and my husband has known her since 1991. She was a wonderful neighbor and a cherished friend. We feel priveledged to call her both. Diana & Robert Cole
