

Barbara Stewart Sayes passed away quietly in her home on January 3, 2017. She was 93. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, January 14 at 2 p m at First Presbyterian Church, 110 N. Adams Street in Tallahassee.
Barbara is survived by her son Robert Stewart Sayes and sister Martha Stewart, both of Tallahassee as well nine nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband James H. Sayes, her brother Samuel R. Stewart, and her parents.
Barbara was born May 5, 1923 in Fort Stanton, New Mexico, the child of Robert C and Julia Richter Stewart. The family moved throughout her childhood as Barbara's father was a dentist with the United States Public Health Service. Barbara graduated from Newcomb College in New Orleans in 1945 where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from Tulane University in 1948.
Barbara and James Sayes were married on September 10, 1949, and celebrated their sixtieth anniversary just prior to his death in 2009.
Barbara and Jim moved their family to Tallahassee in July 1960 where she continued to work in the field of social work counseling at several institutions in Tallahassee including Apalachee Mental Health Clinic. Eventually she opened her own practice, Allied Family Health Services. Barbara retired in 1993.
Beginning in 1960 Barbara was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, and often served as a Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of PEO, an active member of the Los Robles Neighborhood Association, and a master gardener. Barbara and Jim were season subscribers of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra and the Tallahassee Little Theater.
Barbara taught for a number of years in the Social Work department at Florida State University, helping train another generation of social workers.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to Big Bend Hospice and the First Presbyterian Church of Tallahassee.
