On the evening of August 3, 2026, at 8:24 p.m., Benny Rex Helms was welcomed Home into the presence of Jesus Christ after courageously living with Lewy body dementia. While our hearts grieve his absence, we rejoice knowing that the faith which sustained him throughout his life has now become sight.
Benny was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, proud Vietnam veteran, retired United States Postal Service employee, and loyal friend. Although these titles describe the roles he held, they never fully captured the man he was.
Growing up in a large family taught Benny to value what mattered most. He appreciated life's simplest gifts, worked faithfully, kept his word, loved his country, and, above all, loved people. Whether you knew him for decades or met him only once, he had a way of making you feel like you mattered.
His laughter came easily, his smile welcomed everyone, and before long you felt like you'd known him for years. His kindness was genuine, his generosity was quiet, and his servant's heart was simply who he was.
Those who knew Benny best also knew the source of his strength. Through seasons of joy and seasons of hardship, his hope remained firmly rooted in Jesus Christ. His life reminded us that while this world is temporary, the promise of eternal life through Christ is everlasting.
If Benny's life pointed people anywhere, it pointed them to Jesus Christ, the One who faithfully carried him through every season of life and now holds him in His presence forever.
While Benny now rejoices in the presence of his Savior, those who eagerly await the day they will see him again include:
Beloved wife: Joann Helms, his wife of 55 years. Daughter: Lori Helms, Granddaughters: Sarah Grace Summers and Jaclyn Summers, Sisters: Wylene Winters and Pat Gunter
Along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, treasured friends, and countless others whose lives were made richer simply by knowing him.
