Billy Joe Givens
January 10, 1930 – November 1, 2018
Billy J. Givens, 88, of Tallahassee died November 1 following an extended illness. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and brother. There was nothing more important to him than his family.
Born in Dothan, AL, he moved to Tallahassee as a small child and lived for the remainder of his life here. He was a graduate of Leon High School and attended Florida State University.
An avid baseball fan, he started playing baseball as child using a potato sack as a mitt. The oldest of five brothers, they played baseball and softball together into adulthood. He was the Captain of the Leon High School Baseball Team and was inducted into the Leon High School Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013.
His career spanned 38 years for the Florida Comptroller’s Office where he ultimately served as the Director of the Office of Local Government Finance. He retired in 1988.
He was a devoted and loving husband of 64 years to Edith Wells Givens who predeceased him, a father of 5 children, an active grandfather of 14, and a great-grandfather of 9.
He is survived by his five children, Rodney (Keiko) of Tallahassee, Rick (Jo Landa) of Tallahassee, Mike (Jody) of St. Augustine, Steve (Christen) of Tallahassee, Kathy Yeaton (Howard) of Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, 14 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and three of his brothers, Jimmy (Hilda), Jack (Margie), and Bobby (Yolanda).
