Daniel M. Wagner, Sr., age 83 passed away on March 6, 2013, at his home in Tallahassee after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Dan was born in Gadsden County, Florida, on August 20, 1929, and at an early age moved with his family to the Chaires Community in Eastern Leon County where he grew up. He graduated from Leon High School in 1948 and attended F.S.U. and the University of Virginia. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. He was employed by the State of Florida’s Industrial Commission, Milk Commission, and in 1991 retired as Director of Finance and Accounting for the Department of General Services after 42 years of public service. During much of this time he also assisted in the operation of the family farm in Chaires Community until it was sold to Leon County for the construction of the Chaires Elementary School Community Center and recreational facility.
Dan enjoyed fishing, hunting, leisurely drives down rural roads, eating out, and spending time with his family. In recent years he especially enjoyed the fellowship of the congregation at the Mission by the Sea at Alligator Point and was most grateful for their prayers, cards, and visits during his illness.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, David B. Sr. and Ione Wagner; and his brothers, Thomas J. Wagner and David B. Wagner, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Rodgers Wagner; daughter, Diane Wagner Carr and husband Ken of Tallahassee; son, Daniel M. Wagner, Jr. and wife Tammy of Pompano Beach, Florida; daughter, Darby Wagner-Boyett and husband Donald of Attapulgus, Georgia; sisters-in-law, Maurine Wagner and Carolyn Wagner of Tallahassee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dan was a devoted and loving husband and father who will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was respected and admired by many, especially his children who strive to emulate the quiet confidence with which he faced life’s biggest challenges, always doing what he said he was going to do. He was a kind and patient man who truly lived the Golden Rule.
A graveside service will be held at 4:00pm on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Roselawn Cemetery on Piedmont Drive in Tallahassee, followed by a reception at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home, 1737 Riggins Road. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Dan may be made to Mission by the Sea, c/o Ann Price, 28 Carnival Lane, Alligator Point, FL 32346, or The American Cancer Society, 2618 Centennial Blvd, Tallahassee, FL 32308.
