OBITUARY

Donald Lee Hirst, Sr.

October 27, 1930January 12, 2021

Donald Lee Hirst, 90, died at home Tuesday, January 12, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.

The family will celebrate his life in a private service to be held Monday, January 18th at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with an intimate burial at Culley's MeadowWood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308.

Don was born October 27, 1930 in Dearborn, Michigan. He was the youngest of four children and often joked about surviving the childhood antics of his three older sisters.

He was a proud veteran, enlisting in the Air Force after high school and met Toby, the love of his life, soon after in North Carolina. His career also included 30 years as a dedicated public servant working in the procurement division for the Florida Department of General Services. More than anything, Don loved to be home spending time with his family and his four-legged friend, Parker. He also enjoyed yard work, mowing his own lawn until he was 89. A devout Catholic, Don was a longtime active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Known as Dad, D1, Grandpa, Papa, Pop and GGPa, Don is survived by his children Don Hirst Jr. (Christine), Jeannie Hirst Carlton, David Hirst (Lisa), Chris Hirst (Bonnie) and Martha Brushwood (Tom), dozens of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild on the way, along with a host of nieces and nephews.

On his short journey to Heaven, we’re sure Don was reciting a favorite phrase "feet don’t fail me now,” as he joined Toby, his loving wife of 56 years, and his beautiful first-born daughter, Susan Oglesby.
