Doris Janet Owens was born March 27, 1917 in Augusta, Georgia, and grew up in Thomasville. She married Roscoe Whiddon in 1934 and in 1938 they moved to Tallahassee where they raised their three children. Doris was a loving Christian lady, devoted to her Lord and her family. She taught Sunday School for four and five year olds for over thirty years at First Baptist and then at East Hill Baptist Church. When the late Rev. Ray Tindall decided to have a kindergarten at East Hill in 1961 he asked her to be the Director. She enjoyed teaching for ten years until the public schools began their kindergarten programs, and there were too few students to continue. She always referred to her students as “my children” and loved them all. She also taught Sunday School for teenage girls. Doris loved dolls all her life and collected them from the time she was a child. As an adult she enjoyed making porcelain dolls. She made about forty dolls of various styles, also sewing exquisite outfits for them. She was an excellent seamstress and made most of her own clothes and her daughter’s. She also sewed for her granddaughters who lived in Tallahassee. Both she and her husband enjoyed working with flowers. They had a yard filled with beautiful camellias, day lilies, and native plants.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe Whiddon; and all her siblings.
She is survived by a daughter, Ann McGowan (Skeeter) Tallahassee; two sons, Dr. Roscoe O. Whiddon (Pat) Vero Beach, and Roy L. Whiddon (Alison) Nepean, Ontario, Canada.
