Doug enlisted in the Navy in September of 1942 in support of WWII; tour of duty January 1943 - January 1946. He was assigned to a LCM (Landing Craft Mechanized). His unit was part of the D Day Invasion "Omaha Beach" at Normandy, France June 6, 1944. He and his ship mates survived the loss of the LCM and lived in pup tents at the end of a French air strip amid the chaos of the war.
Upon returning home Doug went to work with Southeastern Telephone Company in Charlottesville VA. He was offered a position with the company in Tallahassee.
Desiring a warmer climate he accepted the position without hesitation and moved to Florida. Luck was with Doug again sand brought he and Jacki his bride of 59 years together. In 1969 a promotion would have moved Doug, and family to Nebraska. Instead, Doug took a position with Mobile Home Industries, Inc. Moving toward retirement he worked in real-estate at Crossland Reality and retired in the mid 1980's.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents; Winn and Lizzie, his sister Margaret, and his brother Bob. Also grand dog Chapeau.
He is survived by his wife Jacki, daughters Sue (Barbara), Ann, and Leigh (Shawn).
He is also survived by grandchildren Chaz (Ashley), Chelsey, Wade and Kyleigh, and great grand child Charlie IV. Also nephews; Bob, Spence and Tom and nieces; Maggie, Barbara and Betty (Glen), and grand cats & dog Colburn, Cowahchobee & Chug.
Funeral services will be held 3pm Tuesday graveside at Culley's Meadowwood Memorial Park, Tallahassee.
