May 19, 1919 – February 3, 2025
Eliza Jane Perry, 105, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025, while residing at Aspire at the Gardens in Tallahassee, Florida. She was born on May 19, 1919, in Hertford, North Carolina, to the late Nathaniel and Esther Billups Perry. In 1995, she moved to Tallahassee to help to raise her granddaughters. While here she continued to touch the lives of those around her with kindness, quick wit, and grace.
A woman of deep faith, Eliza embraced Christianity early in life and became a dedicated member of Bay Branch AME Church in Belvedere, North Carolina. She found great joy in serving the church in various capacities, always offering her time and talents to support its mission. As the former wife of Reverend Wiley Cowell, she stood by his side and supported his ministry before their paths diverged. In Tallahassee, she became a cherished member of Celebrate New Life Tabernacle Church, where her unwavering faith continued to inspire those around her.
Eliza dedicated over 30 years of her life to the healthcare industry, primarily as a private duty nurse. Her compassion and dedication to caring for others earned her the love and respect of many. Even after retiring, she remained a steadfast presence in her community, becoming affectionately known as the “Key Lady” at Lake Ella Manor, where she graciously assisted tenants for more than 20 years. Her generosity, warmth, and ever-present smile left a lasting impact on everyone she encountered.
She embraced life with infinite joy and gratitude, always giving thanks to God for the blessings she received and the experiences she cherished, especially her time with family. Her faith and positive spirit remained unshaken, and she often expressed joy in seeing her prayers fulfilled.
Eliza leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: her devoted son, David L. Johnson; daughter-in-law, Paula DeBoles-Johnson; and her adored granddaughters, Zemoria and Zenani Johnson, all of Tallahassee, Florida. She is also survived by her nephew, Charles Butler III of Chesapeake, Virginia, along with a host of extended family members and dear friends who will miss her deeply.
Her legacy of kindness, faith, and service will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
