Elizabeth McCord, 91, passed away on August 20, 2012.
She was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, but spent most of her life in Tallahassee, Florida.
She is survived by her husband, Judge Guyte McCord, Jr.; her sons Rogers Green (Deborah) and Dykes Green (Jan); and her three grandchildren, Jennifer Green, Tommy Green and Thomas Green. Another son, Thomas Sherrill Green, died when he was 8 years old. She was previously married to Thomas S. Green who preceded her in death.
She attended University of North Carolina and Florida State College for Women. She was a former Miss Tallahassee and an early member of the Tallahassee Junior League. Her parents were William Hudson and Mary Rogers. He was one of Florida State University's first distinguished professors and taught English history. He published books about Shakespeare and Browning. A residence hall at FSU, William Hudson Rogers Hall, is named for him. Her sister was Dr. Isabel Rogers who was a former moderator of the Presbyterian Church.
She loved life and filled it with friends, family and chocolate. Family always came first. She was known for her generosity, energy and spirit. She was a very social person and often left you waiting while she would converse with perfect strangers. She also was known for her quick temper and when she cursed using a certain term you learned fast to back down.
Nurses that cared for in her later years were often very diplomatic in discussing their dealings with her. Comments about her in her later years included "a real pistol" and "feisty". She was a strong willed woman that did not like being told what to do or when to do it. She frequently wore slippers to all kinds of occasions and thus the term "Libba slippers" was born. She took a passion for shopping to new levels. There are shops in town that knew her on a first name basis. She loved nature and spent many hours with her friends on the Sopchoppy River and at the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge. She also loved spending time at her parent's beach house at Panama City Beach, at friends' homes at St. Teresa Beach and at the family farm in Miccosukee.
In recent years after her marriage to Judge McCord, they spent summers at his house in Horse Cove, North Carolina. She called it a "heavenly place to live". She will be missed by many.
Arrangements are under the direction of Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home in Tallahassee, Florida.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, August 23rd at 10:00 AM at Roselawn Cemetery on Piedmont Road. Memorials may be made to Big Bend Hospice, Tallahassee, FL.
