Ernest "Jim" Kirschke
June 10, 1928 – April 8, 2021
Ernest James Kirschke “Jim” 92, of Tallahassee, passed peacefully away at home on April 8, 2021.
He was born in Detroit, MI on June 10, 1928. He grew up during the Great Depression and knew the value of hard work. He worked several jobs in order to put himself through college. He attended the University of Detroit and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering. After graduation, Jim enlisted in the US Navy. He had a desire to serve his country and he knew that his enlistment would also allow him to receive a stellar education, one he may otherwise have not received…the true American Dream! After Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California he went on to get his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
He proudly served for 27 years. After his military career, he and his family made Tallahassee their final home. There he went to work for Olin and Winchester in St. Marks. After 13 years, he retired for the final time and began to travel the world with Annie, the love of his life, who he has now been reunited with to continue their 70-year journey. They enjoyed many of those trips with their best friends Gerry and Denise Daigneault who were their partners in crime both in Tallahassee and around the world.
He was very involved with the Good Shepherd Parish for over 40 years. He served there faithfully. Jim enjoyed family life, and the fine arts. He was an ardent supporter of the FSU Theater as well as the Tallahassee Little Theater. He also loved FSU Sports and was a proud booster since 1978.
He had a passion for serving people and loved to give back. Jim often used his personal resources to support charities like St. Jude, the PHI Center and several veteran related charities. He loved supporting the locals and could often be found dining at local restaurants especially Georgio’s where he considers George, the family and staff a part of his extended family.
He is survived by his son, Christopher; daughter, Maureen and granddaughter Jordan. He is also survived by many relatives in the Michigan area as well as dear local friends including Sherry, who helped in so many ways over past 20 years.
The Memorial Mass will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday April 28, 2021 at Good Shepherd Parish with a reception to follow in the Community Center.
Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral home is assisting the Kirschke family with arrangements.
