He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on September 9, 1938. George graduated from Weehawken High School in 1956. He served four years in the Air Force and then graduated from Montclair State University in New Jersey. George received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Florida State University in 1975. After serving in several positions with the State of Florida, George found his true calling and became a Unity Minister in 2001. He served as the minister of Unity in Ft. Walton Beach for over 14 years before retiring and returning to Tallahassee in 2015.
George married the late Sue Miller in 1979 and became the stepfather to her 4 wonderful children, Gayle, Ken, Karen and Kim.
In 1998, he met Barbara Namey at Unity Church in Christ in Tallahassee and they were married in 1999. George and Barbara loved traveling this beautiful country, especially the backroads and National Parks. The highlight of their travels was a trip to Australia and New Zealand.
George loved his FSU Seminoles, faithfully attending as many football games as possible. But mostly, he loved spending time with his children and later his grandchildren and great grandchildren. One of his most treasured accomplishments was performing the weddings of five of his grandchildren.
George will be most remembered for his zest for life, his compassion and the way he could light up a room with his smile. His legacy of unconditional love will live on in the many lives he touched.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Albert Schmidt, Sr. and mother Emily Schmidt and stepdaughter, Gayle Harrell.
George is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; brother, Fred Schmidt (Margo); stepchildren Ken Miller (Cindy); Karen Miller; Kim Straubinger( Brent); step grandchildren Jessica Melone (Brian); Courtney Trkovsky (Jason); Sarah-Beth Baum (Brandon); Erin Tyre(Trent); Adam Straubinger (Caitlin); Anna Winters (Tyler) great grandchildren Audrey Miller, Robbie Trkovsky, Conner Trkovsky, Ryland Tyre, Kade Tyre and Noa Straubinger.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1pm on April 27, 2024, at Unity Eastside, 8551 Buck Lake Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32317.
