

Gordon Lewis Guthrie passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the age of 78. He was a resident of Tallahassee, Florida for over 40 years. He leaves behind his loving wife of nearly 30 years, Barbara Davidson Guthrie.
Gordon was born in Nashville, Tennessee on August 23, 1936 and was the only child of David Guthrie and Margaret Tate Guthrie. He graduated from Oak Ridge High School in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 1954. After high school Gordon spent two years studying business at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee. He joined the Air Force in 1956 serving as a Military Police at Landstuhl Air Force Base in Germany and later at Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta, Georgia.
In 1960 Gordon began working as a machinist apprentice with Union Carbide Nuclear Division in Oak Ridge. In 1973 he moved to Tallahassee where he worked for the Florida Department of Community Affairs. In 1984 he was appointed Director of the Division of Emergency Management for the State of Florida where he acted as advisor to the Governor for disaster and emergency planning and preparedness. In September 1991, Gordon retired from the State of Florida and enjoyed spending time with his family and playing golf at Hilaman Park Golf Course where he also worked part-time as an assistant manager. Gordon was a passionate fan of college football and the Seminoles. He loved to watch games all day on Saturdays then read and talk about it all day Sunday.
In addition to his wife, Gordon is survived by three children; David Guthrie (Lori), Sharon Bragg (Cecil), Doug Guthrie (Lisa), his step-daughter Dana Jackson, five granddaughters, three grandsons and four step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Don Guthrie.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 21st from 5 to 7 pm, at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32312. A celebration of Gordon's life will be held on Monday September 22nd at 11 am at MeadowWood Memorial Park on Timberlane Rd.
