Griffith Thompson Pugh, Jr. peacefully passed away on August 15, 2018, after a short illness. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 19, at Shandon United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be after the service. Burial will be at Culley’s MeadowWood Memorial Park at 10:00 am on Tuesday, August 21.
Griff was born in Florence, SC, on March 17, 1937. He moved with his family to Tallahassee, Florida in 1947, where he lived until coming to Columbia in 2006. He was a 1956 graduate of Leon High School in Tallahassee and played the French horn in the marching band. He also played the piano. He worked with Good Will Industries and then Publix. He sang in a barbershop group and also in the church choir at Trinity and at Shandon. While in Columbia he was a resident of Forest Pines Retirement Home. He was an avid cross word puzzler and loved Christmas. He enjoyed life and loved desserts, especially cake.
He is survived by his sister, Clelia Pugh Moore, two nephews, Wayne (Lori) and Phillip (Tonya) Moore, a niece, Caroline Pugh Johnson (Dean), four great nephews, and three great nieces. A brother, John Dixon Pugh, predeceased him.
The family wishes to thank the nurses in the ICU unit at Providence Hospital for their extraordinary and loving care. Memorials may be made to Shandon United Methodist Church in Columbia or to Trinity United Methodist Church in Tallahassee.
