Harriette (or Miss Piggy to most) was born in St. Louis, Missouri to George Maurice McCartney and Rose Ganley McCartney on April 14, 1918. She was the fifth of ten children and is predeceased by eight of her siblings and survived by a younger sister, Doris Rose McCartney Hofma. Harriette moved to Tallahassee with her family in 1931 and was witness to great changes to Tallahassee over her lifetime which she never tired of recounting to those near her. She married Leland Lawrence Burton on April 20, 1940 and, with him, bore and raised five children; Leland (Larry), Charles (Tommy), Julia Anne (Julie), Pamela (Pam) and George (Bert). She was always up for any adventure, as long as family was with her. Harriette crocheted prolificly and frequently gave pieces away to family and friends. She was introduced to bowling in the late 1970’s and it quickly became her passion second only to her family. She was an active league bowler until just a few months prior to her passing. She was legendary in the local bowling scene and folks flocked to be around her whenever she entered the lanes. She was a truly unique lady who lived a long, eventful life and touched countless people along the way. She will be sorely missed.
Harriette is survived by her sister-in-law Irene Burton Sykes of Arizona, her children, Leland Lawrence and Nan Burton of Crawfordville, Florida, Charles Thomas Burton of Duluth, Georgia, Julia Anne Burton Marsh of Tallahassee, Florida, Pamela Lucille Burton Ubben and Debra DuBose of Pensacola, Florida and George Albert and Kathy Burton of Tallahassee, Florida, eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
