She was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia to Josephine McCormack Watson and Albert Lewis Watson on August 27, 1926.
She was raised in her grandfather McCormack’s house with her sister, Gertie, until she ventured off on her own to Washington DC, Miami, and eventually Tallahassee. She has four beautiful children, Susan Mommsen (Kent), William Sowers (Anne), Richard Gallagher (Patty), and Michael Gallagher. Her sons, Billy and Michael, preceded her in death, and she’s got many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, grand nieces and nephews and step children around the country from California to Maine and the whole state of Florida.
Helen graduated with an Associate of Arts degree from Miami-Dade Community College in 1975. Her career started at Florida Highway Patrol and took off at Florida International University where she loved working as the Head of Communications. It’s also there in Miami she found the love of her life and married Donald Lee Fox in 1980. They later moved to Tallahassee where she continued her career working for the State of Florida, and eventually settled into retired life there.
Helen and Don were active in the Killearn Methodist Church. They faithfully attended services and volunteered generously over the years. There was no job too small or too large for the two of them.
Helen was an avid reader. She stayed on top of news and current events and whatever was on the New York Times Bestseller list.
She enjoyed any time she could spend with her family. She loved watching her grandkids grow up. She patiently listened to their stories and looked at the thousands of photos they shared. A giggling grandchild was always sure to make her smile. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and loved her.
Services will be held at Killearn Methodist Church 1 pm on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. Interment will follow at Culley’s Meadowwood Memorial Park.
