Herbert Jay Silver, born August 18, 1931, in Newark NJ, passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones, on April 25, 2024, at First Commerce Center for Compassionate Care in Tallahassee. Husband to Greta (nee Pruzan) for 60 years until she died in 2015; father to Benita (Pierre Siry), Alan (Gail), and Daniel (Dana); grandfather to Benjamin (Shawn), Marcus Levin (Shauna), Jacob (Amber), and Zachary, Rob Ward, and Heather LeBlanc (Jim); great-grandfather to Reese and Isla Levin, and Brandon LeBlanc; and brother to Ilene Field (Gerson), Herb enjoyed being surrounded by family, friends, food, and festivity. He served in the US Army, as Private First Class, and was stationed in Germany. Upon his discharge, Herb married his beloved Greta, and they lived in Chicago, where he owned a childcare center. Several years later, they moved the family down to Florida (where they had met during their courtship), where he owned a second childcare center, and then became a successful realtor. Early on he bowled, played Monopoly, collected stamps and coins, and later told others, “Now I just collect money.” He enjoyed shopping, was great at fixing things, and loved cars, movies, trivia, and travel. Herb was an avid joke-teller, frequently bursting into laughter with the punchline. A memorial service will be announced.
