He was born on August 26, 1951 in Meridian, MS. He attended Sable Palm Elementary, James S. Richards High School and FSU - Superintendent Commercial Construction. He joined the US Army at the age of 17 in 1969 and served in Thailand during the Vietnam War as a heavy equipment operator for a three year tour. He had a fulfilling career in construction, working for Ajax Construction, Inc. for many years and Childer's Construction, Inc. where he retired as a superintendent of construction, working mainly on renovation projects. He was proud of the fact that his very first job as a young man was with Childer's Construction and his last job was with Childer's Construction, where he later retired.
J.R. was known for his zest for life and life to J.R. meant fun, laughter, family and friends (and friends were family to him). He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and playing with his toys which were race cars, old cars, old trucks, and his Harley's. He had a passion for "taking a ride" whether it was across town or across the country. He would buy his "toys", take them home, grab his tools and start "J-R izing" them. They all had to have something or some part changed, no matter what, something had to be modified to his taste. Everyone could depend on J.R., if you called him for help you knew he would be there. His presence would light up the room and fill it with laughter.
J.R. leaves behind his wife Tammy, stepsons Zachariah Faulkner and Brandon Ransom, his sisters Sallie Walker, Frances Owens and Beth Nichols, his mother-in-law Kaye Gross, his brothers-in-law Franky Walker, Tillman Owens and Rod Gross (Lori), his nieces and nephews Dennis O'Neal (Melissa), Eddie O'Neal (Karli), Jennifer Bradwell (Joey), Bonnie Fletcher (Bart), Jason Walker (Catrina), Jaime Bass (Tyler), Dell Bennett, Christina Nichols, Kyle Gross (Jennifer) and Ashley Dorris (Alan) and many great nieces and nephews
J.R. is preceded in death by his parents Morris E. Himler and Myrtle (Himler) Taylor, his brother Jake Himler and his father-in-law Gene Gross.
In 2015, he accepted Christ as his personal savior and we all can find comfort in knowing we will see him again in heaven.
