He was born in Moultrie, Georgia to James Odell and Nellie Lucile (Gainous) Slappey, on April 22, 1930.
He is survived by his wife, Madeleine Janita Slappey (nee Worthy); two daughters, Deborah Moses (Rick) and Karen Baggett; grandchildren: Amy Sperando (Paul), Marcia Hare (Michael, dec), and Michelle Sewell, (Jeremy); great-grandchildren: Michael Hare, Emona Sewell, and Ellie Sperando; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by both parents; sister, Jean Johnson; and brother, James Erwin Slappey. He is survived by sister, Stella Frances Pritchard of Pittsburgh.
He was in the U.S. Army, a veteran of the Korean War. A prisoner of North Korea for several months, he escaped and found his way back to his lines.
He loved to fish and went on many fishing trips with his buddies. Jack served as an Elder at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Tallahassee for many years.
A memorial service will be held at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 8300 Deer Lake Road, on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 4:00pm. Interment with military honors will be at a later date.
