James William Callis III

passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at the age of 72.

James, or “Bill” as he was known to his friends, grew up as a young traveler. As the son of a US Air Force Master Sargeant, Bill had the opportunity to spend some of his childhood in Japan. At the age of 12, his family settled in Homestead, FL where Bill graduated high school. He spent nearly 4 years in the Navy, many days aboard a nuclear submarine. Bill then earned a two-year degree from the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale.

After living in North Carolina, Bill moved to Tallahassee. Bill had a variety of careers, including retail/restaurant work, serving as hibachi and sushi chef, truck driving, both long-haul and locally. Throughout these years his passion for artwork and love of nature endured.

In 2008, Bill participated in his first art show with a selection of his printed photos. His art business soon grew to include award winning paintings and his work sold at art shows throughout Florida. Bill’s wildlife photography and paintings reflect his enjoyment of time in nature, which included hiking, camping, and canoeing, always with a camera or two at hand.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, James William Callis, II and Anita Elizabeth Perry, and his sister, Susan. Bill is survived by his former wife, Mary Ann who cared for Bill to the very end; two sisters, Jackie and Robin; 3 nieces, Sarah, Erin, and Stacey; 1 nephew, Mitchell; and 4 grandchildren (by marriage), Gabriel, Jacob, Bella, and Logan.

A Memorial Prayer Service, followed by a Celebration of Life, will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at 2:00 PM, at St. John Neumann Center, 685 Miccosukee Road, Tallahassee, FL
