

James H. Cox, of Tallahassee, entered into rest on October 27, 2014. Jim, as he was known as, was born on May 17, 1928 in Miami to William Nicholas and Lenny Phillips Cox. He attended grade school in Miami and was a graduate of Miami Technical High School. After high school, Jim attended Embry Riddle school of Aviation in Miami. He joined the Florida Highway Patrol and was originally stationed in Fort Pierce and then was reassigned to the Fort Lauderdale station. Jim joined the US Army in October of 1952 and served his country proudly in Korea. After his service in the US Military, Jim returned to the Florida Highway Patrol in Fort Lauderdale. Later, Jim transitioned to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles in Tallahassee and was later appointed to the Assistant to the Director by Director Ralph Davis and later appointed to the position of Deputy Executive Director by Attorney General Bob Butterworth. He served as the Director of Driver Licenses until his retirement in 1994 after 45 years of service to the State of Florida.
Jim believed in service to the community, as evident by his memberships in the Roe Fulkerson Lodge of the Masons of Hollywood, Florida, the Scottish Rights, Miami, Florida, The Shriners of Morocco Temple of Tallahassee, Florida.
Jim is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Jo Cox; sister, Thelma Joyce Eberwein; and many nieces and nephews. Jim is also survived by close family friends Danny and Ann Daniels and David and Vickie Laing.
He is predeceased by his sisters Florence Bible, Wilma Briggs and May Williams and brother William Fredrick Cox.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, October 30 at 2pm at the Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home, 700 Timberlane Road.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Children Hospitals or the American Cancer Society.
