He was born on June 16, 1930, in Leon County. He served in the United States Navy. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Lee and Beulah Hollingsworth Thompson; a sister, Nell Thompson Dickinson; and a brother, Carl Lee Thompson, Jr.
James worked at Moon Jewelry Company for over 47 years. Highlights of his career include his term as President of the Florida Jewelers Association, membership in the Florida Jewelers Association 24 Karat Club. He also was the first recipient of the Southeastern 24 Karat Club Most Outstanding Jeweler of the Year award. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Florida State University, Seminole Boosters and FSU Alumni Association. Service organizations he participated in for many years were Exchange Club, the Elks Club, and the Shriners, where he was raised to a 3rd Degree Blue Lodge Mason, 32° Scottish Rite Mason and later a Shriner, Morocco Temple and the Jesters.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, JoAnne Moon Thompson; and his children, James Ralph Thompson, Jr., Rachael Thompson Hofmeister (Jeff), Lester Lee Thompson, Kelly Thompson Langston (Michael), William Joseph Thompson, all of Tallahassee and Henry Durwood Thompson (Tracie) of Green Cove Springs. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
The family will received friends on Monday, February 11, 2013, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Culley’s Meadowood Funeral Home on Riggins Road. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Bradfordville First Baptist Church with burial following at Culley’s Meadowood Memorial Park on Timberlane Road. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Big Bend Hospice.
