Jose Luis (Pepe) Sanchez was born on March 7, 1927 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Nicolasa Velez and Francisco Sanchez, who predeceased him. He graduated from Central High School in 1944 and received a Bachelor in Civil Engineering degree from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, in 1949. After graduation, he started his career by working at the Department of Public Works, where he supervised construction (several towns in Puerto Rico) and at a private engineering firm, Casas Sanz y Casas. Later, he became an independent contractor, building many homes and buildings throughout the island, including in Jayuya, the home town of his beloved wife, who also predeceased him.
On 1951, he met his wife, Ada Robles, who passed away in 2016. They married in 1952, and lived in San Juan and summers were spent between San Juan and Jayuya. He is survived by 5 of 16 siblings and 4 of 5 of his children: Ada Luisa (Adita) Sanchez and Carlos Gomez; Gilberto Luis (RIP); Jose Luis (Toti) Sanchez and Raquel Bejarano; Maria S. (Mari) Morales and Jose D. Morales; and Luis J. Sanchez and Pamela Sheldon; his grandchildren: Carlos, Lara, Ada Gilda, Joyce, Joellie, Jose III, Martin, Elaine, Jose Javier, Luis Daniel, Ricardo, Anne-Marie, Nicole, Michael, Celso, Jake and Peyton; and his great-grandchildren: Mia, Lessia, Kiara, Lyle, Lucia, Alessandra, Isabella, Carmen Marie, Gabriela, Lazarus, Edith Rose, Gabriela, Camille and Lucas.
He loved fishing, singing and playing dominoes. Swimming and softball were two of his favorite sports. Also, he loved traveling around the world with his wife, family and friends.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Pepe will be remembered with a family-only gathering and with a celebration of his life to be held at a future date with family and friends.
