

Joyce Ivie Odom passed away August 10,2010, at Heritage Health Care after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. EDT, Sunday, August 15, 2010,followed by a Memorial Service at 3 p.m. at Culley's Meadow Wood Funeral Home-1737 Riggins Road Chapel (850-877-8191). Inurnment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions to the Parkinson's Foundation, 710 West 168th Street, New York, NY 10032.
Joyce was born on May 13, 1934 in Tampa, Florida. She attended schools in Tampa and graduated from Hillsborough High School. During her teenage years in Tampa, she played guitar, sang and yodeled in several country western bands and sang at her local church. Joyce settled in Tallahassee in 1970. After raising two children she later completed her education at Tallahassee Community College and Florida State University earning a Bachelor's degree in 1972 and a Master's degree in 1975. Joyce was employed by the State of Florida Department of Labor and Employment Security in their office of Disability Determination for 21 years, retiring in 1996. She received many service awards including the Atlanta Regional Social Security Special Act of Service Award in 1993. Along with her husband Harold, Joyce was an active member of Springtime Tallahassee 20th Century Krewe, the Andrew Jackson Staff and St. Mark's Yacht Club. In her leisure time, Joyce enjoyed working in her flower garden.
Her survivors include her husband of 31 years, Harold Odom; daughter Blue Smith and husband Tommy of Kaneohe, HI; son Greg Golden and wife Gabrielle of Tallahassee; and stepdaughter Janet Gallagher and husband Jim, Bradenton, FL; grandsons Matthew and wife Laura of Jacksonville, FL and Geoffrey Howard and wife Leslie of Centreville, VA; granddaughter Stephanie McAllister and husband Colin of Salisbury, MD; and Bridgette Maryman and husband Brice of Seattle, W A; and 6 great-grandchildren; sister Barbara Brown and husband Bob, and brother Douglas Ivie and wife Rosemary of McAlpin, FL.
She is preceded in death by her parents, James Morris Ivie and Nellie Mabel Green of Tampa, FL and brother James Ivie of Tampa, FL.
Arrangements are under the direction of Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home in Tallahassee, Florida.
