Dr. Juanita Bailey was born in St. Francis County, Arkansas to Mr. Robert L. Cobb and Barbara H. Cobb. Her accomplishments and associations were many. Dr. Bailey earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics and a Minor in Natural Science Degree from Prairie View A & M College, Prairie View, Texas. She earned a Master of Science Degree at Florida A & M. University and the Doctor of Philosophy in Human Affairs Education- Social Studies Education from Florida State University. Dr. Bailey did post graduate study at New York University in Higher Education New York, New York and Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana in Science Education. Her rich background prepared her for the many contributions she made in education.
During Dr. Bailey’s tenure at Florida A & M University, where she was professor of social studies education, received many honors and awards. Some of her honors are as follows: Florida A & M University’s Outstanding Achievement Award, Chosen Teacher of the Year 1989 -1990, Listed in the 1992 -1993 Who’s Who and American Education, Who’s Who Among Child Development Professionals, Reader’s Digest Award for Academic Excellence and Phi Delta Kappa Service Awards
Dr. Bailey held membership in numerous professional organizations. Her professional organizations include the following: Florida Council for the Social Studies, National Council for the Social Studies, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and Florida Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. Her civic and social organizations include the following: Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Science Contact University System, Social Studies Resources in Florida, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and Kappa Alpha Psi Silhouette Auxiliary.
Dr. Bailey was actively involved in research during her years of professional services at Florida A & M University. Her research studies include the following: “ A Survey of Teachers Estimates of High Intelligence in Grade Four, Five and Six”, Using Cartoons to Stimulate Writing” and “The Role of Geography in Preparing Prospective Teachers to Become Informed Citizens Worldwide”. She also authored numerous publications and articles which were published in the Social Studies Teacher, an International Journal: “The Significance of Social Action Learning in Elementary Schools “, “The Study of the Role Perception of Elementary Social Studies Teachers” and “The Social Studies and Social Action Learning”.
Dr. Bailey earned the title Professor Emeritus from Florida A & M University, the university’s highest honor. She among others were honored at a special banquet sponsored by the university. This was an historical event for the first group of professors to be so honored. Dr. Bailey retired in 1993 from the College of Education at Florida A & M University where she served as a professor of Social Studies Education for thirty-six years. She continued to serve on several university committees including the Advanced Teacher of the Year Selection Committee. She was also invited on several occasions to serve as an Adjunct Professor in the College of Education.
Dr. Bailey enjoyed traveling with her husband of sixty – seven years and they were avid travelers. They traveled to all the states in the United States, the providences of Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Joan Lee of Miami, Florida; two granddaughters, Kim Lee of Tallahassee, Florida; Erica Lee of Miami, Florida; one great grandson Malcolm Lee- Fulford of Miami, Florida, and relatives of Kalamazoo and Three Rivers, Michigan.
