On Friday, January 10, 2025, Katherine 'Betty' Oldham Bond, formerly of College Park, MD and Tallahassee, FL, passed away peacefully at the age of 91. Her beloved husband, Monte B. Bond Sr., left this earth in January 2021; they had been married for 64 years at the time of his passing.
Betty was born on September 18, 1933, in Warrenton, Virginia to Lillie P. Oldham and Jasper G. Oldham. She was the mother of five children whom she adored - Tracey Upton (Kathy), Melissa 'Lisa' Ashcraft (Randy), Monte Bond Jr. (Jennifer), Kerry Bond-Mason (Matthew), and Samantha Bond Richman (Timothy). She was also the proud grandmother of eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She is survived by her brother, James Oldham, currently residing in Pensacola, Florida; her siblings Grady and Mary predeceased her in death.
After graduating from Greenbelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland, Betty began a long and incredible career. She first became a secretary and worked in various administrative capacities until beginning her family. Upon rejoining the workforce, she was employed by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). At the CIA, she rose through the ranks - from clerical work to being a highly regarded analyst and project manager in the area of photographic interpretation. During her 35+ years of employment there, her work contributions led her to receive countless awards and recognition.
College Park, Maryland, was home to the Bond family where all five of the children were raised. After she and Monte retired, they moved south to Tallahassee, Florida, to enjoy the warmer weather.
Throughout her life, Betty was devoted to her husband and children, and she loved each of them with all of her heart. Never one to sit still for too long, she could just as easily be found playing games with the kids inside or out, playing cards with anyone who had a deck on hand, to peacefully working on crosswords puzzles or reading a good book. Betty also loved the outdoors be it riding a bike, fishing, snorkeling for scallops or simply just laying on a beach. Betty was a friend to all – whether it was the neighborhood kids and other parents, the folks next door, or the countless wonderful friends she and Monte met throughout their life and worldwide travels together. She and Monte loved to entertain, so it was not uncommon to find a houseful of folks over for cocktails and dinner.
Betty always had a smile on her face, had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to joke and laugh. She was the epitome of beauty, grace and elegance. If you asked her how she felt, she was always ‘fine as frog’s hair’. She had a heart of gold and will be missed terribly by all who knew and loved her.
Services will be privately held at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home & Memorial Park in Tallahassee, FL. A Celebration of Life will be held in Sage Restaurant, 3534 Maclay Blvd S, Tallahassee, FL 32312 on Saturday, March 15, 2025 from 1pm - 3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.
