Larry Duane Bashant
February 16, 1944 – April 5, 2021
Larry Duane Bashant, 77, passed peacefully on April 5th, 2021, at his home with his family at his side. He was born on February 16, 1944, in Tupper Lake, New York, to his parents Norman and Thelma Bashant.
Larry graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder and was later commissioned as an officer in the United States Army. He was a Viet Nam veteran and completed his military obligation with the rank of Captain.
He served the state of Florida for 36 years primarily as an unemployment compensation specialist retiring from the Department of Economic Opportunity in 2008. Acknowledged by his peers and supervisors, Larry was known to ensure that unemployed Floridians in need were properly and quickly compensated.
Larry was a loyal and faithful Florida State Seminole fan. For many years he was a Seminole Booster and football season ticket holder. In the last few years, he became a dedicated attendee at the Seminole women’s soccer, basketball and softball games. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife, Dottie, spending time in Alaska, the Caribbean, and his favorite city, Key West.
In addition to his parents, Larry is preceded in death by his sister, Norma Bashant, and step-daughter Tereah White. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Dottie, his son David Bashant (Gretchen), son Michael Bashant, daughter Catherine Ragsdale (George), step-sons Johnny Haight and Bobby Haight (Samantha), step-daughter Sharon Haight, and his brother Ron Bashant (Vickie), brothers-in-law David Porter and Charles Porter, nieces Stacey (Tim), Karen, and Kelly (Mark), nephew Kevin (Maura) and their son Beckett. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren Adrianne, Sabra, Cailyn, Jake and Alexa.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, April 17th, 2021, at Capital Heights Baptist Church, 7150 Apalachee Pkwy.
Military honors and final service will be rendered at the Tallahassee National Cemetery, 5015 Apalachee Pkwy., at 1300 hours (1:00pm), Monday, 19April.
To Honor Larry and his love for the Florida State Seminoles, you are encouraged to wear Florida State attire for these services.
