Larry "Jack" Jackson Powell, Sr.

Larry Jackson “Jack” Powell Sr., 82, a proud U.S. Army veteran and former Building Maintenance Manager in the banking industry, and a resident of Tallahassee, Florida, passed away peacefully at Big Bend Hospice on June 24, 2025.

A son of the late Lewey Thomas Powell and Lillian Irene (née Rufus Cannon) Powell, Larry was born in Robertsdale, Alabama, on August 24, 1942. He honorably served in the U.S. Army in Armor from 1965 to 1967, achieving the rank of Specialist 5 and receiving the National Defense Service Medal and Sharpshooter (Rifle) qualification. During his time in service, he was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, and served as a Track and Wheel Vehicle Mechanic.

After completing his military service, Larry continued his commitment to hard work and community. He was known for his strong work ethic, resilience, and strength of character.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Barbara Anne Land Powell; his sons, Larry Powell, Jr. (Steffany) and Dusty Powell (Megan); and four cherished grandchildren: Haley McQuaig, Jordan Powell, Macy Powell, and Maverick Powell. He is also survived by his siblings, Lowell Powell, Linda Albea, Lew Powell, Lester Powell, Loretta Bowman, and Lois Taylor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Lynn Powell and Levern “Bern” Powell; his sister, Lorene Dean; and other loved ones who welcomed him home with open arms.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 3, 2025 at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home, 1737 Riggins Road, Tallahassee, FL 32308 with Funeral Services beginning at 11:00 AM and a catered reception following the service from 11:30am - 12:30pm. Burial with Military Honors will be held at 1:00 PM at the Tallahassee National Cemetery, 5015 Apalachee Parkway, Tallahassee, Florida 32311.

The family welcomes flowers, which may be sent to Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home on Riggins Road in Tallahassee. Donations may also be made in Larry’s memory to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd, Tallahassee, FL 32308.
