Lester Augustus Cofield Jr., affectionately known as “Big Les,” was born on February 6, 1960, at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City to the late Lester Augustus Cofield, Sr. and Evelyn Chandler Cofield. He was the third of four children born to this union. His eldest brother, Timothy N. Cofield, preceded him in death shortly after birth.
A proud native of New York City, Lester was educated in Catholic schools throughout New York and later graduated from Julia Richman High School. Though New York would always hold a special place in his heart, Lester eventually relocated to the South in the early 1990s, making Tallahassee, Florida, his home.
On February 11, 2006, Lester married the love of his life, Koneisha, and together they built a life filled with love, family, laughter, and countless memories. For 20 years, their marriage was a testament to devotion, companionship, and love through every season of life.
Lester was a hardworking man who took pride in providing for his family and serving his community. He worked at Florida A&M University as a Dorm Attendant before joining The City of Tallahassee Streets and Drainage Department, where he dedicated many years of service before retiring in 2015.
Beyond his work, Lester found joy in the simple things that made life meaningful. He was an avid sports fan who loved all sports but, especially enjoyed college football and basketball and was a diehard Florida Gators fan. He loved gathering around a domino table, listening to music, and spending time with the people he loved. His presence brought a sense of comfort and familiarity to those around him.
But perhaps Lester’s greatest legacy was the love he gave his family and especially his grandchildren.
Lester was a nurturer and protector—a man who loved deeply, cared fiercely, and made the well-being of his family a priority. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. Those who knew Lester knew that beneath his strong exterior was a heart that was incredibly tender when it came to the people he loved.
Lester was preceded in death by his parents, Lester Augustus Cofield, Sr. and Evelyn Chandler Cofield.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 20 years, Koneisha Cofield; sister, Susan Cofield; brother, Jonathan Cofield (Cheryl); daughters, Taiwana Cofield and Evelyn Cofield; grandchildren, Gionna and Giovanni Cofield; nephew, Malik Cofield; niece, Tiffany Cofield-Luck; bonus children, John Willis, Lashawn Latimer, Natasha Martin and a host of great-nieces, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
Though his presence will be deeply missed, his love will continue to live on through his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, family, and friends. His memory will forever be a blessing, and the love he gave so freely will never be forgotten.
Rest peacefully, Lester. Your life was a gift, your memory is a treasure, and your love will live on forever.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, 1737 Riggins Road, Tallahassee, FL 32308, US, on August 29, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
